the origin
it started with prime numbers. i was obsessed. i wrangled corey into the black hole of trying to solve riemann, because why not i guess. and we wanted to learn more about insanely big numbers and how they operate. mersenne primes specifically. we got obsessed with gimps, the great internet mersenne prime search. honestly, the idea that thousands of computers scattered across the world could share a single enormous problem and crack it together was just cool as shit.
then november 2022, chatgpt. i come from communication and language and had a background in biology and mostly business, & corey is a lineman by trade and a mathematical genius by nature. no formal training, just dropping the most insane ideas constantly. just one of the most original problem-solving minds i've ever been around in my life. he's built mathematical instruments from chalk drawings that have changed my life.
we were honestly early and we were learning about information theory, computer science, and maths and got up to training our own models, off our own research, and looking back, we were a part of a community that was running inference locally before local ai was really the trend. we felt like first-movers because we were. we weren't very good at it but hell, we tried. and then we started paying attention to what was happening around us — the data centers flooding into louisiana. not much to be said here. i mean, come on. this is our home.
we genuinely couldn't get excited about building something that made that worse. so we got more honest about what we were actually trying to do. the goal was never to make another model, honestly. no resources or higher education or connections. it was to make the ones that already exist cost less. in electricity, in memory, in harm. that's what rb labs is.
the founders
came to this from language, not calculus. i care about what things mean to people, to communities, to the world. but i'm really just a fucking nerd. i'm the one who wants to understand the why before i touch the how, and i believe the best technical work is always in service of something human. and i really want to find the pattern of primes. i won't, but i want to.
